Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Zurich, in early summer of 2014.

Time

It was about 11 a.m.

Lighting

The contrast between a huge window and a gloomy hall of the old city structure was captivating, the light falling in such a dramatic way was enhanced by post processing.

Equipment

I used my canon 450D and a my Tamron telephoto lens, which is why the window looks such dramatically big and the scene so intimate.

Inspiration

I'm always looking around for what i call 'loud or classical scenes'', most often i don't have much time to just soak up every corner of the places i visit, so i learned to be like the mongoose; eyes wide open and the neck fully functional. Walking around with my camera I often look like someone who just got out of jailhouse after a long sentence and only has a weekend to experience it. Especially if i'm visiting somewhere for a short period of time. This particular photo is probably one of 5 dearest to me taken from Switzerland, because it represents the counterbalance of this urban, fascinating, hi-speed working city. A young man looking like he's completely isolated from the world, taking the eternity to immerse himself into a piece of writing, weather it's a letter from his mother/father or a piece of the holy scripture. The photo has a 'zen' quality to it and is taken in a city that can not be described in that manner, not by a long shot.

Editing

As i mentioned, besides the black & white choice of the color, i've added the light intensity falling through the window onto the 'urban saint'...

In my camera bag

Very modest one; canon 450D, 50mm 1.8 lens, standard kit lens 18-55mm,and also a kit telephoto lens Tamron 70-300mm

Feedback

The eye and the heart that powers it is your best friend in such kind of photography. Capturing the human condition in it's rich diverse story lines is the key. If you are interested in life, people, life, structures, truths then the scenes reveal themselves. The technical part is something you learn over the years, but the heart is...well, in the the heart of it hehehe
