Behind The Lens
Location
I took this at Navarre Beach Florida. I love photographs on the beach. The sky was such a beautiful color of blue so when the seagulls flew it presented a great opportunity.Time
This was taken in mid afternoon on a very clear sunny day. I wanted the birds to pick up some of the light from the sun on their wings. So I positioned my self looking just to the left of the sun and waited for the birds to circle back to land. A little bread will coax them back to where you want them.Lighting
The sun makes for great pictures of nature and birds. I am an amateur and really just getting started with photography but I have found that birds look great when I can position so that the movement of the wing picks up light from the sun.Equipment
I use a Nikon D3200; Lens is a Nikon DX VR . Lens was at 35mm focal length. I have been experimenting (learning) with various f-stops and speeds to get the look I want on a bright day. I took several shots before I go one with the color and composition that I wanted.Inspiration
I love trying to catch birds doing something. I always take bread to the beach so that I can coax them a little closer. These birds had been eating and a child ran by and scared them. I threw a little bread and then took this shot as they were coming back to get the bread I was tossing.Editing
On this particular shot the only post processing was to decrease the brightness just a little, and to crop a little of the sky on the left side. I prefer to do as little post processing as possible. In my camera bag
I have only been doing photography for less that a year. I carry my camera, and a 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens. I usually have a tripod in the car. I don't have a lot of equipment but would love to have other lens.Feedback
A calm day on the beach when the water is calm and the sun is bright is the best day for capturing seagulls. When the water is calm the gulls spend a lot more time in the air looking for their next catch. I like the lighting from mid-afternoon until dusk for capturing pretty pictures of seagulls. For me, being a beginner, outdoor shots in the bright light is easier to accomplish a shot like this than in an area with shade and changing light. Patience is the key to capturing a pretty bird shot when you want to catch them in the air. Experiment with F-stops and ISO combinations to get the watercolor look. F-stops of 16-18 with ISO of 200-400 usually result in a great shot on a bright day!
