Location
In a hotel shower in NYC while I had some visitors in town. (I normally take over their hotel and create shoots in some fashion - perfect opportunity)Time
This was taken late at night, with just the light of the bathroom, as well as the fog made by the steam of the hot water.Lighting
Lighting can be edited a bit in photoshop, as well as the added colors and intensified patterns the fog created.Equipment
I had a tripod, my cannon 7d, a 35 mm, and a timer/remote shutter release.Inspiration
My whole series of these, named Mind Chatter, is based off of internal dialogue of self. For this photo, I wanted it to resemble my experience of having the World fade around me, and to have an intimate moment with myself - where it seems that reality fogs and I feel my awareness in my body heighten. It seems I feel how small a human is in the whole grand scheme of things, and my animal instincts spark a fire within me.Editing
lots. Photoshop on blast. lots of intensifying the colors of the fog by repeating the image over itself with different blending modes, and then masking out whatever wasn't working for that layer. There there was a bit of retouching to create the same sort of ghost face, with some added pixels to create a more film look. Then, global edits over the whole image to unify as well as sharpen and create seamless grain. In my camera bag
keep it simple for me. A camera - with a zoom lens as well as an 80 - a speed light, my timer/release, and a tripod - with extra batteries as well as a memory card. Most importantly, I always have a sketchbook and some pens to be able to write down whats coming up for me and inspiration that I am having in that moment.Feedback
turn the camera around - have an intention of what you want to bring out of you... go for it. For me, writing. creating a playlist for myself. stepping into a space I make safe - self portraits is a great discovery of an experience. Technically, that's what you get to figure out... the more important aspects, for me at least, is the "why" behind a piece - what do you really want to say?
