Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was take in in Varanasi, India. This is one of the many ghats along the Ganga River.

Time

This photo was taken around 7 AM in the morning. I was in Varanasi for only a few hours and had to catch a flight at around 10 AM so got up early morning to headed over to the ghats to click as many photos I can.

Lighting

I wanted to have a good combination of the warm sunlight of the morning sun and the cool hues of the water so was was careful not to over expose the photo.

Equipment

This photo was shot with the Nikon D3200 with the 18-55 mm kit lens.

Inspiration

Varanasi is an amazing place for any photo enthusiast. Being one of the oldest cities in the world it provides many amazing moments to capture culture and tradition. I wanted to capture something that will being back the memory of my short travel to this place which is what inspired me to take this photo.

Editing

As mentioned earlier, I wanted to show a good contrast between the warm morning sunlight and the cool hues of the water which is what I tried to further enhance in the post processing stage playing with split-toning by making the highlights more warm and making the shadows more cool.Shooting in Raw helped tremendously with this. Apart from that I cropped the photo a little to make a more tighter composition.

In my camera bag

I like traveling light and carrying just one or two lenses along with my camera. Presently I am shooting with 35 mm prime lens and the 18-55 kit lens for wider shots. I avoid changing lenses in between and rather stick to the lens that is currently mounted on the camera to capture the moment. This forces me to me more creative and also helps me be more strong with composition in that particular focal length.

Feedback

The first and the most important advice is to always have the camera with you when you when you travel, though it might sound quite obvious . Secondly when traveling to a new place before starting to click photos its a good idea to just walk around and experience the place and find something or someone that you find interesting.
