Behind The Lens

Location

We were with a couple of friends walking in one random evening and arrived to a beautiful place, Touru -river, which is located near the center of Jyväskylä, Finland. The photo was taken next to the river as the sun sets. The river is on the right side of the model and there are these beautiful trees besides the river, which appear in the background of our model.

Time

We were taking a walk in the evening, so the clock must have been somewhere around 19 to 21. I do not remember the exact time, because I took the photo about three years ago. However, I do remember that it was a very beautiful sunset, and when I took the picture, I immediately noticed that it worked really well.

Lighting

I like to take photos slightly from below (view), so that the model feels - so to speak - greater. When I was taking this picture I saw how beautifully the sunlight falls to the background trees, and to the model's back, separating her nicely from the background. There wasn't any other/fill light used at the time when this photo was taken, only the sunlight.

Equipment

I had the Canon 650D camera with the 50mm portrait lens with me. The photo was taken by hand-held, so I did not use a tripod. I did not also use any fill light because the sunlight was very enough.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the very moment of the evening. I did not look for a specific viewing angle, style, location or anything else at that night but as the moment came I felt that the picture must be taken immediately so that it may become good. Yes, I have my own style of photography -- that is -- I take pictures from a little below (angle) that the model feels more "greater" and this always affects the style of my photos.

Editing

I always post-process my photos, especially if I'm going to put them forward to customers, or for public display. As I was editing this image I enjoyed it for a few hours. I cut the picture exactly the size I wanted, polished the model's skin, put little light to her eyes, teeth and to her face. I blurred the background, so that the model will stand out better in the final output. I wanted to highlight the image's warm and green shades/color, and I think I managed it really well. The final image became very warm and elegant. I also made the model a little bit sharper, because the picture was actually taken by hand-held and the model was slightly blurred, even though the lightning was good.

In my camera bag

Almost always I take my photos with the Canon 650D, because it's the only camera which I own for now, but I get better cameras from my collegues and friends if I need. My brother owns the Canon 5D Mark 3: and I can borrow it whenever I want. I have two portrait lenses, 40mm and 50mm and a longer 35-135mm lens for more general photos. In my camera bag I have two pieces of 32GB memory card and two camera batteries.

Feedback

Wait for the right moment of the day, the evenings and sunsets. The photo was taken in the autumn, but I'm sure you can get the same kind of photo earlier in the summer. If you want to take just similar picture as this, then you should look for nice greenish bush- or tree background. Be sure to take the photo from slightly below and tell the model to look to the future, which means that he/she must slightly lift the chin and gaze up. Take the picture from couple of meters away, and adjust the camera ( depth of field ), so that the background is blurry and model stands out sharp and clear. Have a nice time trying! Never give up.
