Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the wedding if some good friends of mine. They asked me to shoot their wedding and offered to pay me but I declined payment on the grounds that it would relieve the pressure somewhat! The wedding was in the grounds of the Hotel at Drayton Manor Park near Tamworth.

Time

The wedding was at 2pm. To be honest I was concerned that a wedding at that time of day and at that time of year would not allow enough time for natural light photos. This was taken at around 4pm and I was lucky that the weather turned out to be beautiful.

Lighting

I have always liked the way light shining through trees gives the photographer such a challenge and at the same time, protection. You just have to change your angle slightly to get a completely different shot. I had to move pretty fast with this one though as these two young children were moving constantly.

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Nikon D300 using a 18 - 105 lens.

Inspiration

I had taken just about all the standard wedding shots and I really wanted to get a cute photo of the Bride and Groom's youngest daughter. She is just adorable. I followed her around at a distance for about 20 minutes when this opportunity presented itself.

Editing

Just a small amount of adjustment in Lightroom was done to bring out the greens. Apart from that, nothing!

In my camera bag

I always carry my 18 - 105 which I find unbeatable for most situations. My new Sigma 10-20mm wide angle which is great whenever you find yourself standing too close to buildings! My 70 - 300 which is my only true zoom lens. A cloth for my lenses, batteries x 6, speed light, small and large tripods (I love long exposure photography and am just beginning to learn), my Lee Big and Little Stoppers, 3 spare CF cards, card reader, remote release, polariser and ND filters.

Feedback

Patience! I knew that if I kept with this small child for long enough and made sure I kept her between myself and a pleasant background that at some point I would at least have a chance of getting a good shot. In the moments when I knew I would not get a shot of her I would practice to see what the conditions were like because they change every few moments!
