Behind The Lens

Location

Alcatraz Island, San Francisco, CA

Time

I was on the afternoon tour of Alcatraz and peeked into a side room where I saw the ran down tile floor.

Lighting

The lighting was coming in from a side window giving the hallway an eerie glow, but with the tile area slightly highlighted.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D Mark II with an older kit lens that I used to travel with.

Inspiration

The eeriness of the old prison hospital wing combined with the lighting is what caught my eye. I did not realize how amazing it looked and how everything came together until after I got home from vacation and could look at in on a computer.

Editing

I did minimal processing. Other then some minor highlight softening, all that was really need was the conversion from the RAW format.

In my camera bag

I normally carry just my camera and a lens. My favorite lens right now is a 24-105mm, F/4.0. Most of the time I travel light so that I'm not encumbered by a lot of equipment. It also makes me get out of my comfort zone sometimes.

Feedback

Always look for the light! With this digital age, always take the shot even if you don't think much of it beforehand. I have gotten some amazing photographs from the random shots I've taken that I didn't think would be interesting.
