Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Beachmere, Queensland Australia. It was my first visit to this location and it didn't disappoint. Lots of mangroves and trees that will provide many great opportunities to photograph for future outings.

Time

From everything I have heard about this location it was best to visit here at low tide to be able to get close to the submerged trees. I reviewed the tides and the most suitable time to get there on this day was 2pm. With the bright sunlight at this time I was able to take a long exposure shot using a 10 stop neutral density filter to give the smooth serene look to the moving water.

Lighting

I wanted a serene minimalist shot and with this in mind being around the peak of the day with the sunlight I was able to use a 10stop neutral density filter to provide me with the result I was seeking.

Equipment

This shot was taken on a Canon 5DMKIII with a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens, Lee Big Stopper 10 stop neutral density filter, timed wireless shutter release and a Manfrotto 055XPRO3 tripod.

Inspiration

After viewing images of this location from fellow local photographers I wanted to go and shoot my version of this great place. I have always been a fan of minimalist black and white images and when I came across this tree I knew it would provide me a great opportunity to create my own.

Editing

I always shoot in raw thus needing post processing in all cases. This was first processed in Adobe Camera Raw to provide a clean edit before taking into Photoshop CS6. While in Photoshop this was converted to black and white and then multiple masks were created to provide the right balance between the sky, water and the tree itself. Once I was happy with the result a square crop was created to provide a composition I was most happy with.

In my camera bag

For landscape photography I always pack the same equipment. This includes my Canon 5DMKIII, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens. Lee Big Stopper neutral density filter. Lee 1, 2 and 3 stop hard graduated neutral density filters, Manfrotto CPL filter, Timed remote shutter release, Manfrotto 055XPRO3 tripod with 3 way head and multiple CF and SD cards.

Feedback

With all landscapes I take a moment when I reach a location to look around and try and envision a shot before it is taken. Good composition is a must for any photograph in my opinion. For images like this during the day a 10stop neutral density filter is a must along with a timed shutter release and a solid tripod. Weather also plays a big part in how the image will turn out. In this instance the ocean tide had to be low enough to enable me to reach this location. Other times the amount of cloud and position they are in the sky will determine how good the light will be for a sunrise and sunset. If the conditions aren't right for the image you are after keep returning and try again and again until you get that one shot you were seeking to capture at the start.
