This shot was taken at Bannerghatta Wildlife Sanctuary, near Bangalore, Karnataka.. Being a self taught photographer generally I prefer using natural light. Wildlife and Nature is some thing that I relish to capture. Having limited gears my passion sometimes pushes me to take risks in capturing wild animals. This was one of the such scenario.Time
This shot was taken on 22nd June 2014 at around 4PM. I had been to this open wild life sanctuary to show my nephew (who had come from US)Royal Bengal Tiger and White tiger in wild. June is typically summer and mid monsoon time here. Being a family trip,I chose the afternoon (3-4 pm)time as the wild animals will be at their lowest level of activity due to summer heat. But this guy surprised me and I had to quickly gear up to get this shot.Lighting
It was around 3.30 - 4pm summer afternoon. Sun just begun its downward journey of the day. Not a very ideal lighting situation. Considering the summer light and tropical weather, I had Polaroid lens attached to my camera. The hard light of the summer was also casting shadows on the subject.I had to Quickly time the shot based on the position of the animal to avoid the shade of the trees and plants.Equipment
The gears used for this shot Nikon D3100, zoom lens 55-300mm, Polaroid lens.Inspiration
Royal Bengal Tiger is my favorite animal. Spotting a Calm, focused and wild moment of the animal preparing for the attack was a lottery for me :) I was excited to see my favorite animal in its majestic wild look. He was few meters away when the beast was preparing to attack the prey. I quickly opened the door of my safari bus hid myself under the shade of the bus. As I had few seconds to adjust my camera settings. I set it to Shutter priority (to eliminate the risks of exposure to some extent) and quickly adjusted the speed to 400. I was facing him directly few meters ahead. Adjusted my zoom lens to 55mm to get a good view the beast and background in the frame. I was fortunate that he didn't get diverted of my movement though he gave a quick stare and focused back on his prey. Clicked few snaps and uploaded here the best one I had. It was a risky shot but worth it. I was fortunate to get the shot.Editing
As I am not familiar with professional Photo editing tools I use the Nikon editing software that came with camera. The RAW file of this shot was cropped a bit and sharpen tool applied by 1 point. In my camera bag
Among the lenses, Nikon 50mm prime lens is my favorite. 50mm prime helps me to shoot portraits, moments with family and friends and natural scenes with clarity and requires least post processing efforts. Its also easy you use... view and shoot type :) Also as you have to physically move around to frame the shot, it gives a better comfort of shooting instant moments. Also it doubles up as macro when reversed :) My gears usually have Nikon 55-300mm super zoom, VT lens, Filter lens and tripod. Apart from my camera gears, Diary and Pen is a something I always carry with my camera.Feedback
Take risks it is worth it. The thrill you get gives you a sense of achievement and fuels your passion :)
