Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the next town over from where we live in Georgia, its a small town called Hiram. In the historic downtown area, there are active railroad tracks that run through. There is also an abandoned offshoot track section that ends next to an abandoned business. That offshoot track is where this was taken.

Time

I shot this in the golden hour, near sunset. It is my favorite time of day to shoot and I almost always choose to shoot portraits at that time of day. The light is perfect for portraits near sunset.

Lighting

For me, the most perfect lighting for portraits is always near sunset, and a shaded area. The shade provides nice even lighting on the subject and the sunset lighting is golden.

Equipment

Shot hand held with a Nikon D80 and I honestly can't remember for sure which lens I used. Probably my 50mm 1.8 which was my favorite lens at the time.

Inspiration

This is my youngest daughter and I wanted some photos of her wearing this simple white dress. I love to find urban and rural areas, that have beautiful textures, to use as backdrops for my photos.

Editing

My post processing is fairly simple, I adjust levels, sharpen, and burn down the background a bit.

In my camera bag

Nowadays I carry a Nikon D700 and my lenses vary. My favorite walk around lens is a Tamron 28-75 2.8 I love the fixed ap. and I shoot in full manual mode always.

Feedback

When shooting children, the sillier you act, the more relaxed they will be. My daughters genuine laughter in this photo was a direct response to me acting like a loon, lol A word of caution, never shoot on live railroad tracks. Not only is it dangerous, it is illegal. Also, don't worry about them getting a little dirty. Of course she had rust stains on her dress when we were finished shooting, but the stains washed out, but the joy captured in this image will last forever.
