Sculpted by Fuad Abdurahmanov (a popular Azerbaijani sculptor - 1915-1971), this monument to the "Azad Gadin" (Free Woman) represents a time in 1928 when Azerbaijani women stopped wearing the traditional Muslim veil - a woman shown here shedding her veil, as it was believed to symbolize "stupidity and thoughtlessness." Previously erected on this site in front of the Iranian Embassy and Haji Sultanli Mosque, the building is now home to the Azerbaijan Ministry of Social Defense, in Baku, Azerbaijan. A little bit more appropriate in meaning, I'd say.
