Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a trip to Peru in 2011. We were driving in a Minibus from Cusco to the name of our trek when we approached this mountain range.

Time

We got up before sunrise and were driving 20 minutes, when we got out of Cusco and the landscape slowly materialized. When I saw the light and the landscape I got really excited and jumped apron on the bus to get good views. The I took a series of pictures through the windows and the windshield, and this is one of them. I took especially notice of the perspectives and depth layers which unfolded before my eyes. I still regret that I did not ask the guides to stop for a minute and give me more time.

Lighting

Most of the time I try to create oil painting like images. So I tend to have stark lighting, and stronger colors.

Equipment

When I travel, I try to minimize weight of photographic equipment, because I am often in places were carrying too much equipment is difficult. I also do not like to spoil my experience with too much distraction from things around me. I have never brought a tripod with me, so far. If I need support, I lean the camera to a wall, put it on a stone, or ly on the ground

Inspiration

I love landscapes, and the way the scenery unfolded as we rode along was amazing, I needed to save the memory and also tried to convey the awesomeness of this landscape.

Editing

I use either Lightroom for standard photos, but I also do a lot of HDR (as you can see on my portfolio). For the processing of bracketed images use Photomatix Pro 5.

In my camera bag

I typically have my Nikon DSLR (now a 7100) and a zoom lens with me. More and more its the great Sigma 16-35 mm lens, which has the disadvantage that its very heavy. No tripod.

Feedback

The best tip for such a situation is that you should know your camera well and be able to handle it. read the manual! Otherwise the scene is gone before you have the settings right, or the end result will not be good enough.
