Location
In the intimacy of my home in Switzerland. baby was sitting on my sister's lap, herself casually sitting on a bench. I like to put priorities on natural light, so useless to say that all of this was next of the big window looking out on the garden.Time
On a cold winter day, I think the weather was overcast throughout the day so not a specific time that is worth sharing.Lighting
For this shot, no direct light to avoid hard shadows, overcast weather to give a filtered and cold light, and through a wide window to maximize the reflection in my niece's eyes. Light source covering the left 45°- 90° of the subject to highlight her face features and smoothen shadows at the same time.Equipment
I amusing a Nikon D810 for almost everything... And I mean everything. It is always hanging on my side with the 24-70 f2.8 lens attached to it. This shot was taken hand held, biggest opening and quite unnecessarily high ISO.Inspiration
Well, my niece had at the time the bluest baby eyes which super contrasted with her pumpkin hat. She was carried in a kangaroo bag and covered in the (fake) fur. I think all elements were set for a nice souvenir picture.Editing
I do that more than what I want to admit. I am usually playing with curves and for this picture I did a bit of selective desaturation to emphasize the eyes and to dull a bit the oversaturated orange hat. Maybe a bit of contrast et voilà.In my camera bag
Tooooo much. But that was at home so I could use anything. My most common gear is Nikon D810, 24-70, 14-24, 70-200 in 2.8. This is my basic for everything I do or wherever I go.Feedback
I am an opportunist, I don't set up a scene, I don't light to pose more than necessary. Not saying that this is bad or I don't like the creativity of studio pictures, because I love them! No I am simply saying that great photos opportunities await you everywhere, any time. Learn to see them and to seize the chance.
