Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a holiday trip to the beach. We took the chance of an awesome sunset to take this against the light type of photo.

Time

It was late evening in Summer and the sun was setting. There was still enough light to take an against the light shot.

Lighting

We did not use any elaborated lighting. The challenge was to keep the subject in front of the sun and in the middle of the picture, while keeping the details of the background. The light had to be measured prior to the shot, then, making sure that the correct exposure level was set.

Equipment

This shot was done with a Canon D300s. A short zoom SIGMA 17-70 mm with aperture 1:2.8-4 was used. No other garment was necessary. The camera was hand held.

Inspiration

We were having a walk in the beach and the model proposed to play with the sun. She started to pose funnily and spontaneously. When she started jumping came the "magic" photographic moment.

Editing

The post-processing involved just changing the white balance and color hue, luminosity and saturation. The background was given a special attention while the silhouette was kept dark enough to hide the details inside.

In my camera bag

Normally, I travel light with my Canon D300s and a lens. Nowadays I use a SIGMA zoom 17-70 mm, 1:2.8-4 MACRO HSM. It gives a good image quality and quite much flexibility. I sometimes miss a longer zoom for landscape photography but I still prefer having a minimal equipment that I can put in a backpack while I go to work, or make an excursion.

Feedback

We took several shots in different positions, but the best ones came when the model started jumping spontaneously. It was a mixture of technique and having a lucky moment. Without making several trials and letting "something interesting happen", we would not have come up with this shot.
