This monkey is really just eating, but she looks like she is sneering and giving you the finger!

Behind The Lens

Location

Tortuguero Costa Rica from a canal tour boat.

Time

The tour boat that took us around various rivers in the morning to see animals and birds was set up for tourists, not a wildlife photographer like me. That meant that the driver would get up close so the tourists could take pictures with their point-n-shoot cameras or iPhones. As we backed away from the trees, I asked the driver to slow down so I could use my long lens to get a front shot. He did what I asked I was able to get some nice shots of this female howler monkey.

Lighting

Nice day light even though we had off and on rain. The monkey was poking out of a bush and eating.

Equipment

Nikon D300s and Nikon 200-400 lens at 1/1000 sec. shutter speed to handhold in a boat. Aperture priority and spot metering because the monkey was in and out of bushes.

Inspiration

I don't get to see monkeys very often so I really wanted to get some good shots of this howler. I am always looking for something fun to photograph!

Editing

A little extra light but the shallow DOF and spot metering got me good lighting.

In my camera bag

A Nikon D300 with a Nikon 70-200 lens and a Nikon D300s with either a Nikon 200-400 lens or a Nikon 80-400 lens that is smaller and lighter weight. A monopod and several digital cards and batteries.

Feedback

Have your equipment ready and it is best to have two bodies with two different lenses, so you don't have to stop to change lens as the bird flies away or the monkey jumps back into the bush! Also have a raincover for your camera body and lens, since you don't know what might happen while you are out.
