Behind The Lens

Location

I took it at the park next to my house in the city. My neighbor who was ill at the time needed a dog walker. My family and I volunteered to help. Kids naturally bury each other in the sand. Why not the dog? The dog loved the attention so much he kindly let them bury him plus allowed me to snap a pic then shook it all back onto us.

Time

This is before sunset. Sun is tucked behind city. As any photographer knows the best detail lighting is indirect, be it under a cover, or overcast.

Lighting

Being a multi faceted artist means lighting can be friend or foe. I am a jeweler, that means direct lighting when cutting stones or carving a wax to be cast in gold. I am an Iron pour artist, which means zero lighting to catch the brilliance of a 500 lbs of molten metal glowing in the night, I am a painter which means full indirect lighting, I am a photographer which means indirect or ambient results in a larger range of colorschura. Lighting is seasoning to each artist eye. Some like bold enhancement while some need it delicately definitive.

Equipment

I cannot say which I had on hand that day. Luckily I overshoot everyday so my bank of work to look at and share every night will supply: my generation of future photographers, followers, and most importantly self entertainment!

Inspiration

Every image is in my minds eye. I have created a bank/slide show for my children. Mementos such as these are what I openly justify as “my documentary” I take pictures everyday everywhere. People are more forgiving to seeing me holding a camera if I say I am making a documentary. So the inspiration is creating a record of how thankful I am as well as my children will see.

Editing

In my camera bag

Lucky for me my photo teacher taught me that it didn’t matter what you had in your bag. It had to do with your eye and your will. Having been trained on an 8x10 Camera to 2 ¼ to Nikon, Minolta, Canon, Olympus and Panasonic. It became what is charged and not full of images rather than equipment wow. I believe it was my Panasonic in this shot

Feedback

I’m going to have to go with Billie Holiday on this one. I was an award winning photographer, earned a National Endowment of the Arts grant all on my own, but I NEVER really saw until “I saw life through the eyes of a child” This photo is through my children’s eyes, I just systematically pulled out my camera. Advice. Always have your camera! Always ask! (if they are walking on two legs of course) But don’t fret asking! That’s what makes you a photographer!
