Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home.I am basically self taught photographer and I keep on experimenting with different lighting and setting at every location in my home.

Time

Till date I clearly remember It was afternoon with bright sunlight.I was working on computer in my room, all of a sudden my eyes fell on her. She was watching herself on mirror. Her natural expression and intense look forced me to grab my Camera to capture that look. It was quite nice experience, She even was not fully aware until I positioned myself and clicked.

Lighting

I am a self taught photographer and I generally read lot of article from great photographers. It is being said to avoid harsh sunlight ( True ) but sometimes that harsh Sunlight can be used indoor to get good shot. Here no artificial lights were used. Only a reflector and natural bounce from mirror helped mostly along with outdoor light. As I told before I generally do lot of experiment,Specially with natural light. In this shot I tried to keep the bright sunlight coming from window at her left side and back. Same time bounce from mirror helped to lit her right side.I used the reflector no to get light from window but I just altered the bounced light from mirror on her by reflector.

Equipment

I used Nikon D600 with Nikon 50mm 1.4G lens and a self made silver reflector ( Rectanguler about 900X600mm). Generally I dont use Flash and even tripod( Only during some Portrait session cant help but use tripod.) It needless to mention the quality of 50mm 1.4G, everyone loves this small baby.

Inspiration

Basically I must admit Viewbug inspired me to take this photo, Surprised...let me clarify Over the years I have seen so many great photos on Viewbug, where photographer literally created a magic with light ( Natural light), After going through all those pictures on Viewbug,Generally I choose a topic and then keep on practicing on same subject until I get a good result. During that period I was working on "how to take a good picture indoor with the help of only natural light" and always I had an eye at every corner of my house for a good light and a composition. That was the perfect time when I found her in front of mirror. That was the moment I felt as if She was not watching her but facing someone she knew from another world. I just positioned myself in view of light to capture her unforgettable expression. The bright outdoor light, the perfect position of mirror gave a feeling of some door through which they were facing each other.

Editing

Particularly for this picture there was hardly any post processing because I believe most of the thing was good but yes for my other work I do some processing on Photoshop and currently using CS6 and Lightroom 4.4. I feel though we try hard but sometime its become practically not possible to make everything perfect during click and After all it is RAW we need to do some processing. I always try to maintain a limit for my processing.

In my camera bag

I learn from my own mistake and hence I click lot of pictures, almost everyday. So to make it handy I keep my Nikon D600 body with Nikon 50mm 1.4G and another Tamron 28-75 f2.8 always in my bag. These two give me quite a good coverage. Along with these I also carry Nikon 70-300 f4.5-5.6 G ED VR, for outdoor and its VR gives a good result.

Feedback

What I learn over the period is that one must visualize perfect use of his/her composition ( means he or she must visualize the photo wants to capture) and LOOK EVERY CORNER OF his/her VIEWFINDER, Before clicking any single shot. Go all around ( as much as possible ) of your composition means try to see your composition from different angle to see whether your viewfinder giving you same picture what you have visualized or not. Perfectly use the available light. Click as many shot as possible but NEVER REPEAT YOUR MISTAKE. Analyze your shot on computer by self before processing, never imitate others and try to think little different from others. As it says a good photographs is one which attract someone to look on it for a while. So while looking through the viewfinder one must think what is there so that someone will also be attracted. And finally must say dont jump on to shoot/click, take your time arrange composition carefully, find the best angle to capture perfect light and look for a moment through your viewfinder to see whether you yourself impressed with what you see.
