Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Newborough Beach in Anglesey. Anglesey is an island of the North Cost of Wales in the UK and it boasts beautiful countryside, forests and award winning beaches. This particular image was taken on a photographic event we lovingly called Frocks on Rocks. Take a look at some of my other images where you'll see where the name came from; beautiful models in beautiful outfits modelling for us on the rocks at Penmon Point in Anglesey in the morning and at Newborough beach in the evening.

Time

This image was taken later in the day on the Frocks on Rocks event. It was late evening when the sun was setting beautifully off the coast of Anglesey. Everyone else was busy with models but I took a moment out to stop, take a breath and capture the beauty of our surroundings. That's photography to me; seeking those moments that pass us by without notice. This was the perfect time of day for reflection and a moment outside of the rush and demands of life.

Lighting

The lighting on this image was totally natural. We were working with flashes but this was the point where I turned away to capture nature at its unspoilt best. I didn't add anything to the image. Only drew out the best from the RAW image in Photoshop that was waiting to be discovered.

Equipment

I captured the image with my Nikon D7000, 18-105mm lens with the following settings : - Aperture : f/10 - ISO : 400 - Exposure : 1/60

Inspiration

I wanted a moment to myself, at that special time of day, away from the hustle and bustle of a shoot to reflect and breath and take in the air. My aim with my images is to capture how it felt to be somewhere; to be absorbed by an image and this just drew me right in.

Editing

I adjusted the RAW image to take down the highlights and bring out the contrast whilst keeping the play of light on the water by bringing up the yellow tones that were already there. Other than that, it was nature revealing itself like magic before my post-processing eyes!

In my camera bag

I ccarry my camera body (of course) along with four lenses, currently, although I'm hoping to add to that soon with a telephoto converter for my 70-300mm which I love for nature and equine photography. My other lenses are a prime 50mm, my 18-105mm mentioned above and a recent bargain - a manual half-life macro boosted by a full macro converter which I picked up for £50. These lenses don't sell because the newer, lower level DSLRs won't take them but the professional/semi-professional cameras like the Nikon D7000 have the pin that will. all the more reason to wait for the right camera when you set out; save up a bit more and get something that will last and work with you. Other than that, I have my tripod, my memory cards and a trigger should I need it. I also have a Nikon SB600 TTL flashgun that works with the D7000 and they can 'talk' to each other without triggers and receivers if you get your camera settings sorted. This goes with the very portable Rogue Flash Benders that slide into your bag, no problem and can be attached to your flashgun on the go. I should add though that I have three camera bags, for different occasions/scenarios and I still want more!

Feedback

My first and foremost advice is to take your time. Think about what you want then think of the places where you know you're most likely to get it. Spend some time walking around and taking the place in. Don't rush. See things with your eyes first and feel it with your soul. Explore different angles and take lots of photos by which I mean LOTS! Vary your angle; kneel down, lie down, look up, look out and experience it for real. Then you will be ready to capture something meaningful. On a technical level, go prepared. Get yourself a good camera bag, armed with what lenses you have and just go for it. This image was taken with the lens that came with my camera. You can have all the technical knowledge and equipment in the world but if you're not looking, you will never see what's waiting for you.
