Location
I took this photo inside of a glass elevator in the Apple Store on 5th Ave in New York City. I took this photo during a time when I just discovered my love for photography, and frequently went to New York to take photos of everything I could see. I was in the elevator of the store when I looked above and realized that there were people walking around me on the steps in front of the glass elevator. I pulled out my camera as fast as I could when I took this photo.Time
I took this photo sometime during the early afternoon hours.Lighting
This photo was originally taken in color, but as I was tweaking the photo in editing, I realized that the tone in my photo completely changed in black and white. The shadows cast from the buildings, the people, and the railings of the staircase meshed so well with the white sky and the reflective glass walls. The bold contrast between the shadow and the light of the interior and the world surrounding me, suddenly became more interesting with all the vivid color washed out from the scene.Equipment
At the time I only had a simple KODAK EasyShare Z981 Digital Camera. That's all I had, but it worked just fine for me, and helped me capture this photograph.Inspiration
What inspired me to take this photo was just the spontaneity of realizing the beauty in a simple moment of time. I was just standing inside of a glass elevator, I looked up and saw the world around me, there was nothing else to it. When I'm taking photos, I always look at the little seemingly ordinary moments happening around me for inspiration. Anything and everything, can have the power to inspire someone. I keep that thought in my mind, and when the moment comes, I try my best to capture those moments.Editing
The only post-processing I did was edit the lighting, color, and contrast in my photo. I used a simple editing software I found online at the time. I really liked the way the photo looked in black and white instead of color, so I played around with that for a while till I felt like the photo was edited the way I wanted it to be.In my camera bag
At the time I didn't have much equipment. I only had my camera with me. Now, I have my Nikon D3000 and a few lenses and a lens cleaner with me at all times. That's all I usually need.Feedback
My advice to people looking to capture a moment like this, is to always be ready to take a photo. It sounds really simplistic, but it's true. If I didn't have my camera ready to go the second I was in that elevator, I would have missed my shot. It's also important to always have a curious nature towards your surroundings. You're never going to know what kind of shots you're going to take until you take them, observe them, and play around with your photography. Don't be afraid to get out there and explore!
