Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Poole Town and Country Fair, held at Upton Country Park in Dorset, UK.

Time

Late morning.

Lighting

Well, the day was bright sunshine but, fortunately, the small group of reenactors had just sat down to lunch in their tent, which meant the background was quite subdued. I don't use flash, much preferring to make the best of natural light.

Equipment

My Canon 5diii and stock 24-105mm lens.

Inspiration

I have started to take an interest in some of the 'street photography' portraits to be found on Viewbug and other online forums and liked the idea of trying my hand with reenactors as they are less likely to be embarrassed. It's worked well for me this year and I shall be trying more of it!

Editing

Quite a bit of Lightroom help to get the look I had in mind, darkening the background to remove any distractions, and enhancing skin tones as well. I then used Topaz Clean edge boost to finish-off. I think the secret with pp is to make small, subtle, changes - particularly with skin tones, and then go back later and reassess the results.

In my camera bag

I'm getting-on a bit in years so try to travel as light as possible - camera and lenses are heavy enough, so the 24-105mm and 100-400mm, plus an extender, some grads and a polariser - that about it. I only carry a tripod when I know I'll use it - mostly for panned action shots.

Feedback

There are lots of events that offer this sort of opportunity - civil war, viking, medieval reenactments and, especially over the next four years, WW1 commemorations with reenactors. Engage with the intended subject and they are usually very cooperative.
