Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Grand Rapids Michigan during the very popular Art Prize competition.

Time

Hundreds of artists display their work at Art Prize but being an artist myself, I couldn't let the day go by without my camera in my hands. I am constantly looking for perspectives that others will not see. I stepped inside a permanent sculpture just outside the JW Marriott hotel. I am always intrigued by lines and forms, reflections and color. This had it all. I snapped several angles and admittedly cleaned up some dead bugs off the sculpture!

Lighting

I was shooting into the sun so I used the sculpture to block the direct rays. I did not use a fill flash.

Equipment

Canon 7D, ISO 200, f9 at 1/250. I had a 16 mm focal length for this shot.

Inspiration

I see things... and when I see them I must shoot them. My eyes are very true to me and help me discover the world around me. My quest is to show others what my eyes constantly see. I never, ever stop "seeing".

Editing

I bumped up the exposure a tad and cleaned some dead bugs off the lower sections of the sculpture. Other than that, not editing. I am a straight shooter. Shoot smart first is my motto!

In my camera bag

I am a Canon girl and my bag is tremendously heavy! I carry the best glass and two bodies; 7D and 5D Mark II. I am not a gimmicky shooter. Classically trained.

Feedback

Try to take your time and use your eyes. Trust them and then trust your ability to make your camera work FOR you! You must learn the ins and outs of your tools. Get off program and learn to manipulate in camera not in post. Nothing more annoying than photographers who are really not photographers, rather graphic artists.
