Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a make shift studio in my back room. It was to late to take a photo in any studio's and needed a area where I could control the lighting well.

Time

I took this photo in a make shift studio in my back room it was really late at night about 8 pm and we were both exhausted from work but he came over and it took about 1 an a half hours to paint him and get everything set up.

Lighting

I used one Alien Bee light set at 1/8 a light stand set up a above his face pointing down and another alien bee set at full power behind him to help separate him from the background, I used a white board covered in aluminum to light the other side.

Equipment

I had a sony DSLR camera that was borrowed from my college since i could not afford one yet, there was no flash at all and no tripod.

Inspiration

I had a class project to take a portrait of someone. I choose to do sort of a tin man thing with one of my best friends who has a heart of gold and can shine through the dark. just like the tin man who had one of the biggest hearts so to does my friend.

Editing

I cloned out a few his pimples and around the eyes . I had to brighten it just a tad and color correct it. I cropped out his lower chest and the wall behind.

In my camera bag

I am a college student trying to do what i love with graphic design and photography as a hobby so i do not have a lot of money and mainly the only equipment I use is the camera and the lights.

Feedback

they key to this photo was the paint. we went through a ton of paint bottle to cover him. first we painted his already pale skin with a white paint that had a tad of soap in it to wash off (was still a pain to wash off) , when that dried we added the silver acrylic we needed 3 layers of that to even everything out and being cuatiouse around the eyes. It took a lot of tries before I added the reflective board to give just enough light to his face he actually had to be the one to hold it and luckily I had a co-operative model. The paint in the hair took a long time to accomplish and only painted the top parts not all his hair.
