Location
I took this photo in a park down the road from where I live. Beautiful scenery with lots of trees and a large pond. When I arrive I quickly scout for the nicer backgrounds with the best lighting.Time
This was taken around 10am. The light was still quite gentle at that time of year in Australia! The young boy was a delight to work with. He had so much spirit which I really wanted to capture.Lighting
I put him in the shade so as not to get harsh light directed at him. After seeing the serene look on his face I wanted the rest of the picture to match this. I warmed the photo up quite a bit in photoshop.Equipment
Canon 6d with a 50mm sigma art lens taken at f1.4, 1/2500sec and ISO 100.Inspiration
The child himself. He was so full of laughter, love, and cheekiness. I wanted to capture this. He really was the perfect model! A delight to work with.Editing
Yes. I warmed the photo up in photoshop to give it a more magical quality. I added a sun flare in the top left and also added a gradient layer to try to emulate sunrise or sunset colours. In my camera bag
My camera! Canon 6d, sigma 50mm art lens, a 24-70mm lens and a 70-200mm lens. I also carry with me a spare battery, a tripod and some toys to gain the children's attention!Feedback
I think the first and foremost thing is to have a vision of what you are trying to create. I ask the parents what the child likes so I can talk to them about these things during the photo session. By making the child comfortable with me I really believe they are able to be so natural which is what I want to capture and share. The backdrop is very important and I spend time searching my area for different parks and take the time to look at these places at different times of day. I then spend lots of time taking lots of pictures so I am able to get lots of different expressions. Post processing I tend to study the best photos I have taken and think about how I can enhance them to match the subject's expression!
