Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in the Yarrow Valley in the Scottish Borders. A beautiful part of Scotland often overlooked.

Time

This was taken at about 9pm on a summers evening. I had been working late and needed to unwind so what better way than getting out with the camera!

Lighting

It was getting dark but there was enough light coming from the setting sun to give a nice colour to the sky and field.

Equipment

Canon 7D with a Sigma 10-20mm. Manfrotto Tripod.

Inspiration

I just loved the colours of the crop and the tracks leading away into the distance caught my eye as I was driving past. It was enough for me to turn around and take the shot.

Editing

The image has been cropped and I made some adjustment to exposure and saturation of the sky and the field.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon 5d mk3 along with 17-40 f4 L, 70-200 f2.8 L, Sigma 85mm 1.4, and 24-105 f4.0 L. I've started playing with night photography and have the Samyang 14mm f2.8 lens for long exposure star capture. I also always carry Formatt Hitech 100mm filter system with grad filters and a 15 stop. Tripod is always in the car and depending on where I'm going and what I'm doing I'll take the Canon 600 EX-RT Flash.

Feedback

Keep your eyes open! Be prepared to go out not really knowing what it is you want to shoot as sometimes the best shots are the ones which you've not planned but present themselves to you out of the corner of your eye. Try and remember what it is that you like to see in other photographers images. I am my own worst critic and a lot of images I take I'm not always 100% happy with but that doesn't mean that other people don't appreciate what you've captured.
