Location
Snape Maltings is an arts complex on the banks of the River Alde in Suffolk. Following the river behind the buildings, originally barley maltings, are vast fields of reeds transversed by boardwalks.Time
I discovered Snape on my way back to London from the north coast of Norfolk so it was mid evening.Lighting
The lighting was quite dramatic but fading.Equipment
My trusty Canon EOS 5D with a Canon 17-40mm. Lee graduated filter.Inspiration
The scene brought to mind Moses' parting of the Red Sea and the evening light enhanced the drama.Editing
Convert to BW. Dodging the highlights on the reeds and darkening the already dramatic sky. Adjust levels. In my camera bag
Canon EOS 6D, Canon EOS 5D, Canon 24 - 105mm , Canon 50mm 1.8, Canon 17 -40mm, Lee filters, Manfrotto Tripod.Feedback
Luck plays a big part in landscape photography but it's a good idea to keep your eyes attuned to good composition and lighting. Patience is a useful virtue but sometimes thinking on your feet pays dividends as fleeting moments are sometimes priceless. If you find a good location visit at different times of day, early mornings and evenings are usually the best.
