According to popular Hindu belief one needs to cross the river 'Baitarani' to reach the heavens. Just like the coins for the boatman in Pagan traditions, one needs to pay for the sins of the flesh, and the surest way to do so is to gift a 'brahmin' a cow. Professional brahmins themselves arrive with the cows at the annual fair at Gangasagar, West Bengal to oblige the pilgrims. Against a few bucks to buy the cow and immediately gift it back to the brahmin, one may reasonably hope to avoid damnation and ensure a safe passage across Baitarani, hanging on to the holy tail !!
