Behind The Lens

Location

A tour of India was organised by the A.P.S. This image was taken in the morning of our second last day in India. I have only photographing for 5 years and the learning curve has been quite steep. I was not good at portraiture until I came across the people in India.

Time

We had some time before our bus was to take us back to the airport to go to Delhi, so three of us went for a walk to see what images we could get before we went home. This lovely lady was sitting with her friend/sister taking in the morning sun. She was happy to have here photo taken. Most of the India people have never seen themselves and are overjoyed at seeing themselves in the back of the camera.

Lighting

The light was a little harsh but the lovely lady was sting in a good position almost behind a building where the light was better. I simply asked her to look at me and took this image!

Equipment

I used a Canon 40D, EF 17-85 mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens. ISO 200, Shutter Speed 1/100 @ f/13 focal length 64 mm. Did not use a tripod or flash. Though a little fill flash would have lightened her eyes.

Inspiration

I have never been good at asking people if I could take their photo, but in India the people made it much easier they wanted to have their photo taken. I was walking up the street looking at everything and came across this lady and her friend enjoying the sunshine and each others company. i asked if we could take their photo and they happily sat while I clicked. I asked if she could turn to me and got this marvellous image.

Editing

I did minor adjustments in Lightroom and then took it to Photoshop Elements to clone out the rubbish in the background of the image, which were quite distracting and then I put it in the SilverXF Pro2 to change the image to black and white.

In my camera bag

Normally I have a backpack with a telephoto lens, a macro lens, wide angle lens, flashgun and cord for off camera flash, some filters ND, graduated ND and Variable ND Circular Polarising, a remote shutter release, some clothes to dry and extra batteries and CF cards.

Feedback

If you see an image or some one with an interesting face ask them if you can take their photo or take the image as you see and then ask, if they don't give their permission you can delete it in front of them.
