Location
This photo was taken at Edinburugh Castle. ScotlandTime
It was actually taken a few minutes prior to the firing of the one o'clock gun which is a tradition at the castleLighting
Conditions were not great as the day was very dull and there were continual heavy showers at regular intervals. Not at all like typical Scottish weather.Equipment
The photo was taken on my Nikon D 800E. The crowds dictated that the shot would need to be hand held and the barriers ensured any use of flash would be useless.Inspiration
We visited Edinburugh shortly prior to the Edinburugh tattoo and decided to take the opportunity to explore the castle. I was impressed by the number of female soldiers performing various military roles around the castle and thought this capture highlighted women in the service especially with the howitzers in the shot.Editing
I tone mapped the photograph in post processing to balance the colours throughout the shot. An alternative may have been to produce a black and white copy but I thought the brighter colours complimented the happy disposition of the girls. In my camera bag
I like to travel light unless there is a specific photo or event that requires more specialized equipment. My D800E with a 28 - 300 lens is my main armament and I find I can achieve most captures I need with this combination. I do also carry an 18 - 35 wide angle lens for indoors and around built up area. Apart from these the only other items normally found in the bag are a few filters, spare batteries and cardsFeedback
My main intention for visiting the castle was to get a photo of the one o'clock gun actually firing. A word of advice, do not attempt this without a tripod and remote release. Even those with nerves of steel cannot help but flinch when the cannon is fired which will probably leave you with a photos similar to my attempt, blurred heads and sky.
