Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on a hike in Sol Duc forest on the Olympic Peninsula. It was my favorite hike of that trip, with surprises around every corner, and a feeling of magic throughout.

Time

This was taken mid-morning.

Lighting

Taking pictures in the forest is always tricky for me, but the shaded areas seemed to be working in this photo.

Equipment

I had only my Cannon point and shoot camera. I didn't have a tripod, as I wanted my hands free, in case of tricky slopes, or flooded rivers.

Inspiration

I loved the way the bridge seemed to invite.

Editing

I did a lot of post processing, but do not remember too much as this picture was developed a couple of years ago. I definitely did use the Topaz clean filter, which to me heightened the sense of magic about the place.

In my camera bag

I now carry the kit lens, a fixed wide angle, a macro and a long lens for bird photography. I have UV and polarizing filters, lens cleaner, cable release, plastic camera hood for rain, extra batteries and memory cards.

Feedback

Take a hike in the forest. This specifically is the rain forest, and a good place to go for a feeling of lushness. I think it's easy to get lost in the natural surroundings, and not know where to focus. Find your subject, however large or small. Look for lines and shapes. Find the balance to the overall composition. Go at a time when the exposure will work with you. I did another rainforest hike close to noon, and everything was either overexposed or black. This is basic stuff, I know, but sometimes, when you're traveling, you have to make deliberate plans to be somewhere at a certain time, rather than just get the when you get there. Let the feeling of the place infuse you, and your pictures come out of your inspiration.
