Behind The Lens

Location

In the Spring season I ventured to a beautiful setting nestled in a valley in Roleystone in the Perth hills Western Australia.

Time

Poked my head out the door on a Sunday morning looking at Blue skies on a gorgeous sunny morning. I had one of two choices, stay home and spring clean home or throw together my camera gear, hat, water bottle and take for the road. Yep, took second choice and drove for the hills. When you enjoy photography and the conditions are right its kinda nice to be spontaneous. As I was driving I remembered about Araluen Botanical Gardens with their annual display of tulips amongst other attractions.

Lighting

There are elements I love when taking photos. They are a contrast of blue sky, a few white clouds on the horizon help soften the light in the position I set the camera when aiming at my subject. To get a varied view I position myself low on the ground, well this camera didn't have a flexi viewer. For a likable pic, I wait for that right natural lighting.

Equipment

On this particular day I took the photo of the pretty tulips I didn't bring any fandangle equipment, just me and the camera. I left all the bits and bobs in the car as it was a race to avoid the crowds enter the parkland. It was using basic camera skills, timing and a good eye. Mind you there are days I do just the opposite if I feel it necessary to attach a specific lens, tripod etc..

Inspiration

When walking around for awhile do you sometimes come across an area that has that different appeal about it and that moment you hope to capture something in the way you see with your eyes and in wonder you that can bring that expression into your photo? In this case I have soft tones of wispy clouds and the erect structure of the white blooms with that one feature where a tulip has petals missing and an ornamental tree off the side ready to burst its buds.

Editing

There was no post processing involved as the conditions were spot on and I was happy with the result.

In my camera bag

I enjoy using Nikon cameras equipped with a wide viewer comes in handy for landscape shots and the versatility able to fit any old and the new lenses. I enjoy the technology in these cameras making them user friendly for a beginner or professional photographer. On many occasion I pack a spare battery, a couple of good quality SDHC cards and usually 8GB when taking stills. I rarely take a tripod but find its wonderful for portrait shots.

Feedback

When trying to replicate a photo its near impossible to get the exact shot. My tip is I tripod using props in the place I take my photos. Fence posts, bench seats, building structures and tree stumps. If you like to take photos similar to my tulips then I suggest lay on a grassed area and with the camera close to the ground to get that lovely angle pointing toward the sky. The Shutter speed 10/12500, ISO 100 & Aperture F/4.2 Have a crack and however it goes know the fact you enjoy the journey.
