Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was actually taken one Sunday afternoon in my parents garage. We were only just starting out back then and we didn't have money for a studio or any fancy space with an amazing set up so we got what we needed to make the shot work and just experimented till we got what we wanted.

Time

This was Sunday afternoon but as we where in a garage enclosed away from natural light it didn't matter what time of day it was because this image was lit completely with strobes.

Lighting

The lighting was fairly difficult at first due to the limited gear we had, I knew the look I was going for an just had to experiment with the lighting and position of flashes until we got the desired look.

Equipment

So we used an old white bed linen behind to set the back ground and then used a flash gun pointed at the sheet to blow it out but not too much that the glasses would disappear into the white background. I also had a flash pointing at about 45 degrees towards the glasses to freeze the motion. I knew that by working in a dark place I didn't have to go to fast with my Shutter as the light being captured by the sensor was only from the flash guns.

Inspiration

Honestly I am a self taught photographer from watching you tube videos and my own personally obsetion with photography and a need to know why and how things work. From learning different techniques and seeing what others had achieved with simple photographic equipment I needed to experiment with flash photography myself.

Editing

I used Lightroom to clean the image and take away imperfection around the glass and then simple adjustments to make the image pop as best I could at the time with my Limited knowledge. Now with more equipment and better knowledge and a year on I have learnt photoshop to a medium user level I would be interested in revisiting this concept to see how far I have come.

In my camera bag

I carry a canon 6d now with a selection of lenses from 24 to 50 prime and 105 sigma macro. I also have a canon 8-15 fisheye a couple of flash guns and triggers and I never go anywhere without a softbox or two.

Feedback

Start with the basics learn about the exposure triangle and not only settings but why and how things work. Knowledge is power and the more you have the less you will worry about your settings. Just get out there everyday and experiment. Don't be afraid to learn the software you will be using to give your images that final touch. It doesn't matter if you start with cheaper equipment if you now how to use what you have to your advantage.
