Location
This image was taken from inside a very small cave on a cliff edge near Bondi Beach, NSW, AustraliaTime
It was taken about 6am at sunriseLighting
This was my second attempt as the first had a less exciting skyscape, it took a lot of work to balance the light inside/outside the caveEquipment
Canon 5d Mark II, Canon 24-105mm, F13, 6sec with a 10 stop ND filter, ISO 100, on a manfrotto tripod.Inspiration
I found this cave whilst climbing around on the cliffs, and thought it was amazing that no one was here, yet it was so close to hundreds of tourists and locals on the sea front. I was living in Bondi at the time and wanted to capture the place in an original way which is very difficult with somewhere as popular as Bondi! This cave is only about 3ft wide and high so involved squeezing in and not moving the tripod for the time it took to get all 24 images in this stitched image.Editing
I took this by horizontally panning the camera and taking 12 images then bringing the camera up, and panning the other way until I had 24 images that could be stitched together. To get the horizon horizontal took two seperate attempts. It's all done on photoshop and took hours to perfect. In my camera bag
If I'm out walking I will just carry my 5d Mark II with a 24-105mm, if I'm out for a sunrise/specific shoot I will also take a Sigma 12-24mm and a Manfrotto tripod which weighs a tonne with a grip shift head, but is great for a still shot in windy conditions.Feedback
For panoramics like this I try and be as patient as possible, I like to use filters if there's water or a nice sky involved to give a more dreamy effect, but this lengthens the shutter speed to quite a lot, and when there's 24 images involved like this one it's easy to start letting the overlap become to small to hurry up the shot, but the bigger the over lap the better the final result, so it's worth it even if you do have to squeeze into a small cave and not move for long time!
