A spring storm approaches our campsite along the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands UT, April 2013. This area shows the canyons that the Colorado River has carved into landscape. Just to to the right (south) the mighty Colorado converges with the Green River. Shortly after I took this shot, we were hit with a bit of hail and rain and it left the landscape glistening.

Thanks! Just seeing this photo makes me wish I could transport myself back there in a push of a button. It's the places that are hardest to get to that you miss the most.

Location
It took my friend and I two full days of driving to reach Moab Utah from our hometown of Santa Rosa, CA. One more long but amazing day of driving off road on the White Rim Trail at Canyonlands National Park brought us to our first night of camping at the infamous White Crack "group" campsite. Since we'd reserved the spot about a year in advance we were fortunate enough to have this otherworldly view all to ourselves. Hands down the most epic campsite I've been to.Time
Woke up at first light to see that we had storm clouds headed our direction. We were out here early in the season, so we knew that rain or snow was a definite possibility. The wind was kicking up and the impending rain was coming in fast. Crap, I'd better teardown my tent... but LOOK AT THE VIEW! I had to pack up a wet tent, but zero regrets.Lighting
Mother nature provided the filtered lighting and god beams. What you can't see are the later shots in which the ground was glistening from the rain puddles that had collected. It made the whole scene shimmer. The clouds and beams made the earlier shots stronger though.Equipment
I used my trusty D7000 with the 12-24 f/4, handheld. That's it!Inspiration
How could I NOT take this photo?Editing
Processed in Lightroom. Pretty heavy GND added to the sky. Also brought out some shadow detail. Perhaps it's a bit over processed even for my liking, but it's as close as I could make it represent what I saw with my own eyes.In my camera bag
Back home I'm either working as a studio photographer for Think Tank Photo so my "bag" is more of an equipment locker. For fun I shoot portraiture, fashion and landscape and work with both a D810 and a set of primes (50/135) and a bunch of flashes, strobes and various light modifiers. I'm also big into film photography and currently use a Mamiya 1000S 645 and a Speed Graphic Pacemaker 4X5 cameras. Traveling to the eastern Sierras later this month and that's all I'm taking for camera gear.Feedback
Don't hesitate. If you see something that moves you, take the shot. It's better to have pulled the car over and be late and gotten that killer shot than to kick yourself later for having your priorities mixed up.
