Behind The Lens

Location

A photo taken in Bournemouth from the entrance to the pier across to the park where the balloon ride is.

Time

It was 7:52pm 25th July 2014.

Lighting

It had been a beautiful, hot sunny day and was still very warm as the sun was setting. The light had started to fade a lot by this time and the silhouettes were beautiful.

Equipment

Equipment was a Canon 550D with EF-18-55mm kit lens with a Hoya UV filter and a Giottos tripod.

Inspiration

I'd been studying night photographs and techniques for some time and had an excellent chance to practice at Bournemouth. I simply walked around taking lots of shots on the tripod and I spotted the balloon silhouetted against the trees and buildings and took a few shots.

Editing

I tweaked a bit of brightness in camera raw 6.7 to allow the rich sky colours to contrast with the blacks.

In my camera bag

I don't have a massive amount of kit so I'm very simple in terms of my photography, so it's my 550D with 18-55mm kit lens and the 55-250mm telephoto kit lens. I now also hulk my tripod along for night photography. An absolute necessity is an extra battery as well.

Feedback

If you really want a shot like this then you need to keep your eye on the sky and get the atmosphere that you feel you want. Silhouettes are just a case of using your tripod for sharpness (shutter release cable or timer for keeping camera still) and focussing on the sky so that the light meter gets the sky perfect and darkens the rest. The shutter speed was 1/500th, ISO 100, f6.3.
