Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at slot canyon - Lower Antelope Canyon, Arizona.

Time

This was shot at noon! I had to plan well in advance to specifically book an afternoon photographic tour as I wanted to visit these canyons to get the best shots when high sun rays enters the deepest parts of the canyon to create a range of hues.

Lighting

The most amazing and interesting part of the canyon is one gets to experience a range of colors varying from bright yellow to dark purple depending on what time of the day one visits these canyons. The angle and intensity of sun rays drive the lighting from lighter to darker areas. I had planned for a noon shoot because having the Sun high I could have the most range of natural lighting. For me this shot is an amazing use of natural light.

Equipment

I shot this with a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM on Canon 5d Mark II body.

Inspiration

I had seen images of this place with different forms and animal shapes. I was always fascinated by how light can create magic and wanted to show the full range of hues in a single photo.

Editing

Processed the raw in Photoshop with very minimal light correction.

In my camera bag

5d Mark II body. And also carry EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM to cover the far range. And of course my trusted Manfrotto tripod.

Feedback

This place is a natural wonder and a photographer’s paradise. Please check the weather in advance as due to rainy weather they do close the canyon. Slot canyons can have flash floods if it rains in even the upper part of the area. Make sure one gets a booking for a photo tour so one can spend a good time in the canyon. Prefer booking a slot near noon as light penetrates well in the slot canyon and one can see it lit beautifully.
