Grain is an oil fired power station and opened in 1979. It is located on the Isle of Grain, where the River Medway flows into the Thames Estuary. The station has the second tallest chimney in the UK, at 244 metres (801 ft). It currently does not meet emission requirements and will close in 2015.

Behind The Lens

Location

I am a principally self taught photographer and on a walk out into the Thames Estuary I looked back at the shore and caught this view of Grain Power Station reflected in the water left behind by the tide.

Time

The image was taken at around 4pm on a bright sunny summers day with the sun glinting off of the wet sand that forms the foreshore at this point.

Lighting

The image was shot using the natural light of the sun which was slightly out of shot to the top left. This angle caused the dark shadows from the contours of the mudflats adding an almost surreal alien feel to the landscape before you are confronted with the huge bulk of industry beyond.

Equipment

The image was shot using a Canon D1000 SLR with a standard 18-55mm lens.

Inspiration

At the time I was walking out to an abandoned Napoleonic fort that lays offshore at this point when I noticed the view back to shore and managed to get the reflection of the enormous chimney in the shot too.

Editing

These was very little post processing of this image with minor adjustments of levels, saturation and contrast.

In my camera bag

With my Canon over my shoulder with its, now upgraded, image stabilised, 18-55 lens on and my tripod in its carry bag I also carry a camera back-pack with the rest of my kit in: Canon EF 75-300 1:4-5.6 lens, 2x converter, Jessops flashgun and remote triggers, GorillaPod, Technopro 0.45x Wide Angle adapter, Circular Polarising filter, soft focus filter, ND8 filter, ND32 filter, Starlight filter, ND2-400 filter, camera and lens cleaning equipment, spare batteries and business cards.

Feedback

Be prepared! Wherever you are and whatever your intended subject there will always be something else that presents itself and be prepared to re-group and take that image as well. This is exactly how this one transpired.
