Behind The Lens

Location

I got this shot on the banks of the Arkansas River on a particularly beautiful day. The sky was an amazing blue and the high wispy clouds - usually an indication of a coming rain - were too inviting to pass up.

Time

It was early afternoon, usually a time I'm less impressed with lighting.

Lighting

I'm usually more into sunrise/sunset (side) lighting, but I was feeling the creative urge that day. I'm glad I was!

Equipment

Shot with Nikon D3100 (settings were erased when I saved the wrong version)

Inspiration

I was looking for good examples of rural Arkansas...and what better place than the Arkansas River!

Editing

I really didn't do much processing on this shot. I try not to over-edit. I like to capture the "moment". The exaggerated photos, becoming more prevalent, turn me off. Just a minor color enhancement on this one, coupled with a minor adjustment for sharpness.

In my camera bag

I, unfortunately, can't afford "The Big Bag" - much as I'd like to. I have my Nikon D3100 with standard kit lenses, a UV filter and a homemade flash diffuser for night/low light shots. Oh...and a spare battery!

Feedback

Rivers, bodies of water in general, have always been tough for me. I'm learning more and more that finding a good spot is critical. A horizontal shoreline, some water, and a distant river bank is rather boring. I like to find little inlets, where there might be hidden wildlife or interesting objects like driftwood, rock formations, or willing people. Anything to break those boring "horizontals".
