Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my backyard. I believe I was outside to take a picture of something else, but this bee caught my eye. I wasn't sure if I could get a clear picture of it or not, but I tried anyway. Luckily the sun was at my back and beginning to set, I adjusted my shutter to the fastest setting and sure enough after several attempts I was able to get this shot!

Time

It was right at golden hour. The sun was just about to set when I took this picture.

Lighting

Timing is everything if you're using the sun, the first few moments when it rises and the moments just before it sets can result in some beautiful pictures.

Equipment

Just a Canon T2i and a 18-55mm kit lens.

Inspiration

Nature. I went out to take pictures of scenery and immediately found this guy. I really just wanted to find out if I could get a clear picture so I could see him up close and I did!

Editing

I did quite a bit of post-processing. Mostly just trying to bring the colors closer to how they were in real life. I've always had this dream to be able to share the world I've seen with other people and now I can finally do that.

In my camera bag

I always carry extra batteries, my two lenses (18-55mm and 50mm prime lens), a shutter remote, gopro with various mounts, rode shotgun mic, and various little tools and things that go with my equipment.

Feedback

For anything that's moving fast you need a very fast shutter and a lot of light. I set my camera to the fastest setting which I believe was 1/4000. You need a lot of light, but you also don't want to turn your iso up too high or it'll start to make your picture look very grainy. I try to keep my iso at 400 or below and open the aperture as much as I can. For this picture I was really lucky to have the sun at my back and shining right where I needed it to. If I found this bee in the shade of a tree or even just 15 minutes later it may have been too dark.
