Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Kiamba, Sarranggani Province, Philippines. My family are visiting my grandparents.

Time

This was a spur of the moment thing. I came from a walk from the coastline and when I reached at my grandparents house, I saw my cousin-in-law assisting her daughter in this small tub. As I remembered, this was around 10am in the morning.

Lighting

This was natural light. The area where my niece is located are surrounded by coconut trees and other fruit trees. Some streaks of sunshine penetrated between spaces of the leaves. This was an example of awesomeness of natural light.

Equipment

I used my first camera. This was my Nikon d50 with 18-55mm kit lens. I didn't used any tripod and flash.

Inspiration

I was happy to see my family and relatives. My cousins and I were browsing photo albums in the living room where my grandmother kept them the night before I took this photograph. I saw my father's childhood pictures. It was just a very nice feeling to see and feel the old photographs of my uncles and aunts. Maybe this has inspired me to take photographs that could be memorable and timeless. We are in an era now where we store our pictures on Facebook or Instagram. Lesser people nowadays keep a physical album or photo frames displayed in the house.

Editing

I was experimenting with photoshop when I post-processed this. I did a bit of this and a bit of that. I was just starting to learn about photography and post processing. I copied some techniques from other photographers who shared how they edited their photos. Unfortunately, I couldn't remember how I processed like this - so sorry.

In my camera bag

Currently, my bag contains 1 camera and 1 lens. This is my Nikon Z6 and 35mm F1.4. I want to travel light and I can easily keep on my small backpack.

Feedback

Capturing portraits is not an easy task. In my opinion, making sure your subject relaxed is one of the important thing. You can capture emotions, expressions, and genuine smiles from your subject. This is why it is very good to practice with family, friends or children because they are all at ease with you. There will be more chances of capturing timeless, candid photographs.
