The photo was taken in my hometown called Barót (it is a small town in the heart of Transylvania). This was almost the very first shot that I did with my camera, back then I had a Canon Rebel XTI (400D). I was always fascinated and amazed by the faces of people, loved their portraits and I begin learning that how I should use the light and to take great pictures of people without posing too much. I tried to find that little glimpse of the soul, that shines through the camera and sneaks in into the viewers heart. My old teacher and my good friend of mine said that to me once: -All I see in your pictures is silence, deep silence. Their eyes tella a story of their own and there is beauty everywhere. The beauty of the soul. So this was the second time when I knew that my studio will be called Sand of the Soul Photography.Time
Hm. This is a good question. The shot was taken in the year of 2009 or 2010 I don`t remember that much now. I think it was taken around 3 PM or 4 PM, don`t know for sure now, but I remember it was really hot outside. We were in an old building and we still felt the hot air coming from outside.Lighting
I wanted to take beautiful pictures, portraits, but not those mainstreamed ones. We tried a few locations in that building, but when we entered this place I immediately saw this beautiful light coming in from the place of an old window. I asked my friend to go and stand there, we talked a little about how would she look at the camera and where should she put her hands and that was it. The light was really harsh and the other part of the room was really dark. So I`ve tried to get the settings in that point where everything would be a little bit normal, not too bright and not too dark. It was not that easy. But it was all natural light and I loved it. This was the first time that I fell in love with the natural light and through my student years I mostly took photos with all natural light.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 400 D camera and back then I only had the kit lens: 18-55 mm. So this was it. My camera, my lens and the model who is a good friend of mine. I did not had any flash or any other stuff that would help me taking this photograph. I only used the natural light.Inspiration
The feeling of the place, the building, the model, the light. It was all there in one place. It was the first time when I used my camera like this, I mean I was kind of prepared with the theme of the shooting. All those destroyed buildings, the dust, the nature around it. Art was everywhere.Editing
Back then, when this was my first experience I did not do any post processing, or at least I`v added a little bit contrast and mostly that was it. In these days I do all kind of things with my pictures, mostly because I am doing more of a retoucher and editing work than taking pictures. So that`s why. But when I took this picture I also did do some photo series and those were colored after they were created in order to get the desired look and to match with the story. (All these post processing were because we did not have any equipment to get those desired looks)In my camera bag
In these days I always have my 700D camera with me and my lenses: 18-55mm / 50mm 1.8 / 70-300mm / 35-80mm. Mostly this is it.Feedback
I would recommend you guys, to go outside and explore. Take some shots every day, because time passes us by really fast and one day when you look back to it and find one or a few photographs that came out great, then you can say that it was worth it, every minute in the dirt. If I would have to start learning again, I still would do it this way. Get out the most from the natural light, because when you know how to use this God given wonder, then you will be ready to use artificial ones and get beautiful shots no matter where you are. Don`t worry about if you have a smaller or cheap camera, it doesn`t matter. If you have the eye and mind combined together then you will have the magic to create something beautiful. So if you want to do a really similar shot, all you have to do is to find an empty wall (that would be the background), a model that stands in front of it and a window next to her, where the light comes in and touches her face. That`s it. Oh and I almost forgot, your camera and the settings.
