Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on a farm near Gloucester in NSW, Australia.

Time

It was almost mid-day. We have had a calm relaxing weekend away from hustle and bustle on this beautiful farm property near Gloucester in NSW, which is located near World Heritage-listed rainforests of Barrington Tops National Park. That morning we were leaving, and as we approached the main house to return the key from our cabin, these two farm dogs greeted us. Sun was shining, the day was just beautiful and the dogs seemed to be in a happy and playful mood as well. I could not resist a chance to take out my camera and take a few shots.

Lighting

As it was mid-day the sun was bright. I wanted to ensure that camera would capture the golden brown color of the dogs' coats.

Equipment

This was shot on Nikon D7000, hand-held, Manual settings, using Nikon 18-200 mm lense, at 60mm, f4.8, 1/250, ISO 200

Inspiration

Generally, I love to experiment with pet photography. Dogs are human best friends and I love capturing their lives on photos. In this specific shot I tried to capture a moment of connection between the two dogs. Even though they were so playful most of the time that morning, for a second they just sat down calmly not far away from each other, and from the angle where I was it looked like if one is watching over the other.

Editing

I always try to get an image straight out of the camera to be as close to reality as possible. I might add some post-processing steps such as white balance or saturation adjustment, placing a border around the photo, or adjust focal points, etc. Though in pet photography, I try to minimize that unless specific creative adjustment is made on purpose.

In my camera bag

I know many photographers use prime lenses, have a set of senses in their bags and carry an expensive camera. One day I might join them. But for the moment, I carry my Nikon D7000 and Nikon 18-200 mm lense, Yongnuo external flash with a set of wireless flash triggers, remote shutter release cord and a set of filters such as CIR-PL, ND8, Graduated Grey.

Feedback

If you try to capture a pet (dog) portrait, you know that most of the time dogs are moving. It is important to find a right balance between your shutter speed and aperture and be ready and always on the look out for an unusual move, funky face expression or animal interaction moment. You have to be patient and excited at the same time and, most important, love these wonderful creatures.
