Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the beautiful city of Ronda in the Andalucian region of southern Spain. The western side of the city overlooks the valley of the Rio Guadalevín and my photo is of a viewpoint that serves up amazing panoramas of the valley below.

Time

It was taken in the early evening just as the sun was beginning to set. The low sun created the lovely warm tones that highlight the mountain ranges in the distance.

Lighting

The sun is clearly the backlight in the image but I want to retain some detail in brickwork of the viewpoint in the foreground. This made the exposure difficult but I opted for a fairly slow shutter speed to retain that detail which meant that the sun was very strong in the image, which helped to create the silhouettes of the people in the image.

Equipment

I used my trusty Canon 7D with my walkabout lens, the 28mm to 105mm and shot at the longer end. I shot it hand-held which was tricky using the focal length I'd chosen, so I steadied myself as much as possible against a nearby tree trunk and took the shot.

Inspiration

I was actually heading for the viewpoint myself after visiting it early in the day to shoot the vistas of the valley below at sunset. However, when I saw how busy it was with fellow photographers, I opted to try something different and get a different angle. So after venturing around the corner a little, I turned back and was presented by this view, which I just had to grab.

Editing

I did very little post-processing with this image, just a crop and a little work on the levels to bring out the warm tones.

In my camera bag

I like to travel light, particularly when travelling abroad, so it's normally my 7D and one lens, either a kit lens or wide angle to capture vistas. For more local shoots, I like to be ready for everything so I take along a bag full of lenses, a couple of speedlights, various filters and of course a good old tripod.

Feedback

I like to explore places during the middle of the day (when the light isn't great for landscape photography)and imagine what certain places would look like in warmer, dramatic light. I research when the sun will set (or rise) so I can broadly plan what shots I will go back for, and make sure I get them when up against the clock during the golden hour. Sometimes though, you can just explore and amazing images present themselves in front of you - that's always nice!
