You are now, officially, one of my favourite bird photographers. This shows excellent timing, exposure and focus.

Location
This Osprey was captured close to the North Saskatchewan River, Edmonton Alberta Area. They nest close by but you have to be patient as you never know if and when they will show up!Time
This was captured Aug 31-2014 approx 6:10 pm just over an hour before sunset.Lighting
It was a mixed overcast day, the sun was on him but the background sky had some nice storm clouds that added to the drama of this exposure.Equipment
I used a Nikon D4S body on a Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 sport. Hand held 1/1600 sec, f6.3 auto ISO 283 at 300mm Camera settings were set to -.33 EV matrix metering 9point AF center point extended.Inspiration
I have a deep love and appreciation for birds of prey and I had been looking for a good osprey spot for over a year in order to fulfill my desire to capture something special. Ospreys are an amazing graceful bird that I love to photograph.Editing
I used Phase One- Capture One Pro 7 as my RAW processing Software. Small adjustments to lift shadows and adjust tone. Sharpening was done using an unsharp mask in Photoshop CS5. No noise reduction was used for this capture. In my camera bag

I cannot stress enough to do your research on this bird's behaviour. Ideally you want to find a spot they fish frequently. You want to have the sun at your back as well as the wind blowing from you to the area they are striking or at least crosswind for a side profile exposure like this one. The reason for this is they will use the wind to give them lift once they have captured a fish. You may then be lucky to have him fly directly towards you as he is gaining altitude. Above all you must have patience! I was at this location for over 8 hours before being presented with the bird this close to me. Use natural camouflage as well as what you bring with you. Ideally you do not want them to know you are present or they may decide to fish somewhere outside of your len's range!
