Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Grand Tetons National Park. I loved having the opportunity to photograph the Tetons because there were so many different gorgeous objects to photograph

Time

This photo was taken in the middle of the day, which is something I love about it. I love this because usually I prefer to take photos in the evening, but I still managed to crank out a nice shot even when it wasn't my prime shooting time. This photo was taken on July 23, 2014, at around 1:00.

Lighting

I love to use natural light. Actually, natural lighting is all I use. This was a very nice setting being as the entire area was wooded, so the light that was on the subject was light that was dimmed by passing through the leaves, which I found to be very nice.

Equipment

I took this photo using a Sony α58 and an 75-300mm f/3.5 lens.

Inspiration

I love to take pictures of smaller things, such as insects and leaves. In this situation, it was wonderful because there was a large amount of these ones flying around. I wanted to capture what one looked like and get the colors as deep as I could to attempt to portray the beauty of these.

Editing

Normally, I try to avoid post-processing my photos, mostly because I'm not actually very good at it. Occasionally I'll do some on landscape photos, and rarely on other photos. With this photo, I adjusted the contrast to fix some issues with the exposure.

In my camera bag

What I normally take with me in my bag and what I used for this photo varies greatly. Normally, I prefer to shoot with film and will have a Pentax K1000, Pentax K2 (the film camera) and an Ansco 4.5 Speedes Special With Uncoupled Rangefinder, as well as a 70-210 f/3.5 macro zoom lens, one or two 50mm f/2 lenses, a 28mm f/2.8 lens, and a 35-70 f/2.8 lens. With this kit i usually take polarizing filters and for smaller trips about 4 or 5 rolls of black and white film and around 3 rolls of color film and a roll or two of black and white 120 , and around 20 rolls of black and white and color film and 10 black and white 120 rolls for larger trips. When using digital, which is what I used for this photo, I pack a Sony α58, an 18-55mm f/3.5 lens, a 75 - 300mm f/3.5 lens, polarizing filter, two SD cards (one 32 and one 16 gigabytes) and one battery.

Feedback

Don't always go to get pictures of just one thing. Have an idea of what you want, but always look for the unexpected. Sometimes, those are the best things you find. With this photo, for example, I didn't expect to find these gorgeous dragonflies, but what i expected to find and what i found are two different things. Keep your eyes open for the unexpected.
