This was taken on the Isle of Harris, Outer Hebrides on the west coast of Scotland.Time
Taken at 1400hrs. I find the light in Scotland to particularly unique in the UK. I prefer to visit in winter where the weather is changeable, contrasting and produces some wonderful light.Lighting
Its pretty much as you see it with maybe a little lift on the exposure in processing.Equipment
My first camera - Canon 400D, Sigma 10-20mm, a soft grad filter and a tripod.Inspiration
It was a wrong turn that led me down a track which opened up into this scene. Ironically I almost missed the shot as I was mesmerised by the rain cloud dancing around the mountain having spent 10 minutes just watching with the camera in hand. I felt a few spits of rain which was the prompt to take the photo. You can see a rain squall approach from thee right hand side, within a few seconds after the shot it was pouring with rain.Editing
At this point in photography I didn't know a lot about processing but any adjustments here were very basic and done in Lightroom. The original image was taken in Raw.In my camera bag
These days I carry everything! Canon 5D Mk II, Canon L series lenses - 17-40mm, 100mm, 24-105mm and a 70-200mm. A couple of soft grads, big stopper, remote switch and lens cleaners. I've taken to carrying an Arctic Butterfly sensor cleaner especially if I'm away for days.Feedback
I often find with landscapes so much is down to the right place at the right time as you have no control over lighting. However, I have also come across a scene and sat for hours waiting on the right light, sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn't but it helps to be patient on the odd occasion. I'll frame the shot, select and focus with live view and then wait. More recently I almost always use a soft grad for landscapes.
