Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken around San Diego, CA. Along side the ocean and amongst numerous cliffs projecting out into the ocean.

Time

The lighting was absolutely perfect at this particular spot around 12pm.

Lighting

I loved how the natural sunlight was not blinding on the water but yet enough to make these flowers really stand out against the blue/grey sea foam in the background.

Equipment

The camera I used was a Nikon D3100 and I took this particular shot with the original 18-55mm lens. No tripod was used to capture this picture due to the fact that I took it perched precariously near the cliff's drop off into the ocean. The natural lighting did all the work in this picture by illuminating the colorful features of the sea side cliff.

Inspiration

Color is a key component in all my photos. So when I saw these beautiful flowers growing randomly by the sea, I couldn't pass up the chance to capture it. With the sea as a backdrop, and the beautiful green ice plants as a bed, these flowers make for a vivacious pop in my picture.

Editing

I love raw images that remain untouched, this picture is no exception.

In my camera bag

In my bag, I carry a Nikon D3100 and along with it, two lenses going all the way from 18mm to 300mm zoom capacity. To enhance my love for taking pictures of water and the sky, I never leave the house without my polarizing filter. The remaining equipment consists of two tripods and a cable release to help capture the clearest picture.

Feedback

For any other amateur photographer, I would suggest using tripods sooner than later, especially when out in nature, capturing pictures like this one. If I were to retake this picture, I would use a small (possibly GoPro) tripod to stand among the ice plants that are surrounding these flowers. I would also make sure the water in the background is completely out of focus, as to accentuate the beautiful flowers. Make the flowers the main topic of your picture and use the natural lighting as to add to the rawness of the image; but only if you are not going to edit the photo later on. Have fun with it and take more than one picture, changing the settings on your camera each time, so you get the best picture possible.
