Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a friends farm when we were on holidays in Gilgandra New South Wales.

Time

it was taken early in the morning about 9am ish

Lighting

Nothing really, this was one of those photos that happened in a split second, it wasn't planned at all, I just stood back and made sure that there was no light and dark shadows and then kept clicking as he interacted with his dog.

Equipment

I used a Canon 1000 D for this photo, that is all, it was hand held with a 100 mm Prime lens

Inspiration

The families son had been away working as a builders labourer on the South Coast, he came home to help his parents with the harvest on the farm, he loves pig hunting and this is his pig hunting dog, named Duke. We are family friends and I really wanted something for his mum to treasure, basically it was a matter of hearing the ute pull up in the round driveway, leaping off the lounge, grabbing the camera, running out and saying hi and then standing back and taking photos of him interacting with his dog, it was a completely natural unrehearsed shot, he was only there for literally 10 minutes, he had to go back to the paddock.

Editing

Yes I did some brightening with PSE 11 and added a soft HD effect to bring out the dog coat to make it look a bit better.

In my camera bag

I now have a Canon 70 D, I have my 100mm Macro/Prime lens, a 10-18mm wide angle lens for my landscapes, a 50mm 1.8 lens, I have a 70-300mm telephoto lens, I carry filters, both screw on and perspex rectangles, cable release, speedlite flash, and I made my own hand held diffuser out of stocking material for my Macro work. I carry a tripod as well.

Feedback

Stand back and watch from a distance to see what is developing emotionally, make sure there are no shadows, if so change your angle, make sure the sun is behind you to some extent, don't take your eyes away from the camera, that is when you miss a moment, back button focus is good as it keeps your focus on task, for things like this I use A1Servo, as animals move, it keeps tracking and I also use High Speed Continuous, I would rather take lots of photos that are similar and pick a couple of the best than click once and miss it.
