Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Hamburg, Germany on a Saturday stroll in the port. I love taking photographs there because it is always a huge inspiration when I see myself surrounded by canals and bridges. It brings me back to the times when I lived in Venice.

Time

I took this shot around noontime on May 10, 2014. The weather forecast for the annual celebration of the Harbour's birthday (Hafengeburstag) was not very promising at all and the grayish sky looked quite menacing. However, it inspired me to play with the lighting and different angles of shot. It was either too dark or too light, but I managed to take this photograph successfully in the right moment.

Lighting

Although I was having bad luck and was about to rain, suddenly, there was a short moment of better and brighter sky. I gazed at the sky, quickly grabbed my camera and took the shot.

Equipment

This shot was taken handheld on my Canon 500D, with a 18-200 mm f/3.5 lens, with no other equipment.

Inspiration

One glance at the spiral staircases on the facade of a historic, former brick warehouse, a combination of old and modern architecture was enough. I love dramatic vision, urban chaos of architecture and follow my personal taste.

Editing

I really enjoy post processing, especially HDR. Typically I take few shot sequence, always in RAW format and combine them into a single image. It allows me to personalize colours, make changes in contrast and light. The result can look more natural than the original photograph. My photography is just my personal way of seeing things around me.

In my camera bag

In my bag I always carry my iPhone or a small point and shoot Canon camera. Needless to say, if possible, my preference goes to my Canon 500D.

Feedback

Don't ever be discouraged by the bad weather condition. The unpredictable weather can create interesting and beautiful light no matter what time of the day it is. It is important to see everything around you and too see it in your own unique perspective. We all react differently to the things we see and that is the best moment to capture that personal vision. I'm constantly inspired by other photographers and browse through photos on ViewBug and am endlessly fascinated by the photos that amateurs and professionals alike are taking all over the world.
