Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while out shooting a race on Buzzards Bay off of Bourne MA. I was sitting on the swim platform of the committee boat for the race basically up to my waist in water.

Time

It was around 5 in the afternoon on a fully overcast day.

Lighting

This shot is all natural light I am thankful it was overcast that day on a full sun day this shot would be way to contrasty.

Equipment

I took this shot with a Canon 1d mkII, 16-35 2.8 l lens and had the whole set up inside an Outex waterproof housing.

Inspiration

While out shooting I am always looking for different angles. I had been shooting sailing for a few weeks straight at this point and decided I would shoot as low as possible this day. I was waiting for this particular boat because it always started the same way with a really tight turn by the committee boat.

Editing

After switching to black and white it was really the same thing I do for most of my shots levels, dodge and burn and unsharp mask.

In my camera bag

It really depends on what I am shooting. For newspaper assignments I don't carry a bag just two cameras a 1d mkII and 7d with a 70-200 2.8 and a 16-35 2.8. For sports I bring a 300 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8 on cameras and then a small bag with the 16-35 2.8. If I am traveling I bring the small bag the 7d and the 70-200 and 16-35. And for landscapes I bring the same as traveling but I always have a tripod and a 10 stop neutral density filter.

Feedback

Really for shots like this it is all about access you have to be in the right place at the right time. Also like shooting any sports it is important to know the sport so that you can anticipate the action and make sure to be ready for it.
