This photo of my eldest grandaughter was taken in my home on a rainy Saturday morning while her younger sister was still asleep.Time
Was taken early one morning after a sleepover. We had planned to be out for a picnic later that day, but nature had decided otherwise. So as a mad photography enthusiast, the light I saw in their room, demanded it be used.Lighting
This image was captured using all natural lighting. A large window at frame left allowing perfectly diffused natural light from a fully overcast, but reasonably bright sky outside. I then balanced that with a large plain white stretched canvas as a fill reflector I had set against a wall at frame right, before I called her in for a quick photo. The photo "session" was indeed quick as she is never a willing participant in my quest for portraits of her & her sister. Never work with children or pets right?Unknown to her, I was well ready to shoot a few frames before I said " Hey come here for a second!"...50mm 1.4 lens on, manual exposure was set, background mess removed..ready to go!Equipment
Shot this on a Nikon D800, 50mm 1.4 prime lens. Fairly high ISO, about 800 I think so I could get a good shutter speed for the low light.Inspiration
My inspiration is always to capture memories for myself in the most accurate way possible as a photographer. While I've been known to spend hours in the cold, waiting for the light in some windy location shooting landscapes, but for this one, it was the fact I was just walking past the room & saw that is was full of light, & got quietly geared up & set for what I knew would be a very short opportunity to capture a natural image in a fleeting moment.Editing
I generally always shoot in a RAW format, so there is usually a little processing to be done to bring an image up to a quality for screen or print. Additionally, there was a very minimal lift of levels & shadows, & I also added some contrast as I knew it was going to be a B/W image for the final. In my camera bag
My normal bag is a couple of Nikon bodies & a few lenses... 35mm 1.2, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4 are my go to focal lengths, But I gear up to suit whatever or wherever I'm going to shoot usually. Travel light when chasing the light !Feedback
Planning, thinking ahead & being ready to shoot with confidence before you have the subject in front of your lens is the key to a natural capture I think. No good can come from sitting someone down, or laying down as is the case here, then spending too much time adjusting "stuff" while the subject, especially a child quickly loses interest in what you are doing. Keep it simple...as complicated as that can be sometimes. Such is the joy of Photography.
